This module aims to enable you to examine the role of epidemiology in public health practice. It will develop your understanding of the need for evidence-based public health and relevant research methods in public health practice.

This module aims to enable you to understand the nature and scope of global health issues, and how they are managed through policy, systems and agencies. You will have the opportunity to examine a range of issues affecting health and wellbeing around the world, including the political economy of health and wellbeing, trade, work, healthcare systems, and the impact of global poverty, hostilities and natural disasters on health and wellbeing.

This module aims to develop your knowledge and skills in the promotion of health and wellbeing. You will be encouraged to critically evaluate and analyse health promoting activities.

This module aims to enable you to critically evaluate the health protection function of public health. This will include an introduction to infectious disease and environmental hazards, and their control at an individual and population level.

This module aims to enable you to develop skills in quantitative data analysis and its application to improve population health.

This module aims to develop knowledge and critical understanding of strategic leadership in contemporary organisations. The content will allow critical evaluation of the development of leadership thinking, and will encourage you to understand and apply contemporary theories. It will enable you to develop knowledge and understanding of key leadership issues, the nature of the problems and dilemmas leaders face, the approaches that can be taken, and techniques that can be employed. It aims to enable you to integrate knowledge both from experience of work and theoretical insights to explore managing change and to reflect on the relationship between leadership, diversity and ethics.

This module aims to develop your ability to develop opportunities and interventions to promote health in populations and communities.

The aim of this module is to build on the basic concepts introduced in the Health Protection function of Public Health module. This module focuses on developing your ability to respond to outbreaks – either due to a communicable disease or environmental hazard.

This module aims to develop your knowledge of research methodology, methods and processes that are relevant to public health theory and practice, and can be applied to research studies and relevant literature. You will develop: an understanding of the role of values and ethics in the research process; critical skills in evaluating, synthesising and applying research knowledge; and skills in developing and planning a research project or literature review.

This module aims to enable you to undertake a research project and write a dissertation at Master’s level. It allows you to develop research skills in managing the research processes including how to answer a research question, selection of appropriate methodology and methods, application of the role of values and ethics in the research process, and the development of critical skills in the evaluation and synthesis of research knowledge. It will also develop your application of the implications of research evidence for public health theory and practice. Your specialisation will determine the topic of your dissertation.
